The Battle Within the Prison Forest

Jaguna was the first to attack, he made a loud battle cry and then charged at the twisted mechanical monster, with the hope of placing a dent in its otherwise impregnable defences. The monster expected the hit, calculated a counter measure and initiated the perfect counter strategy in less than ten-nanoseconds; Jaguna never had any hope of besting the mechanical menace, but that was its assumption. At the moment of impact, Jaguna was surprisingly able to block the blow that threatened to send him flying with a surprise manoeuvre of his own, he had some skill in hand-to-hand combat, his fists smash into the beast forcing it to fall upon its biologically enhanced back.

“Error,” the Beast called, as it slowly rose to its feet, “human specimens possess evolved strength and speed; probability of successful extraction decreased by 30%. Advice!”

“Good one Jaguna,” Eniyan commended, “But, I think we need a strategy,”

“You think?” Jaguna exclaimed, as he placed some distance between himself and the bio-mechanical beast, “It’s not that tough, but it almost punched my head off. Gba! I bet you’ll be able to cut it with your sword but be careful,”

“Instructions acknowledged,” the beast voiced after a long pause,

“I think it’s going to attack again,” Ẹniyan observed, “Here’s the plan. Hit and run,”

“Extermination,” the robot said, and to Ẹniyan’s and Jaguna’s shock, the beast rose up to its full length and then charged towards a transfixed Jaguna with the intent of killing him.

Your existence has been a danger to the welfare of mankind, for the benefit of humanity, your species shall be eradicated on orders,”

Jaguna was shocked by the speed of his opponent, he barely had time to brace himself against the impact, luckily his best friend was there, Ẹniyan threw a stone at the monster’s head which broke its concentration, moments before impact, which distracted the beast and reduced the fatality of the blow. Jaguna had the air knocked out of him and judging from the way he landed motionlessly on the floor, he was going to be out of commission for a while.

“Come on! You disgusting mechanical brute!” Ẹniyan taunted, “or you’ll be the one that’s exterminated,”

The beast turned to face the other male that had thrown the stone, calculated its actions and then charged. Ẹniyan who was a considerable distance away from his unconscious friend turned to run away, hoping to buy his friend some time to recover, because he had no hope of besting the mechanical beast alone. Unfortunately, Ẹniyan failed to put into account the speed of the beast, it closed the distance within a matter of seconds, had he not jumped away from its path, it would have knocked him out effortlessly.

“So, your noisy entrance was just for show, you’re quicker than you look,” Ẹniyan commented as he watched the beast rush by, finding it difficult to stop and adjust its trajectory. “Whoever made you, made you to be perfect; but with perfection comes unknown flaws, like your inability to navigate at high speed,”

“I am an advanced evolved bio-engineered beast of destruction,” the beast replied, “your feeble mind cannot comprehend the magnificence of my existence,” it prepared to lunch another attack.

“So, you even have an advanced A I Programme, impressive,” Ẹniyan continued, knowing fully well that this mechanical beast had the ability to adjust to any new strategy that he could come up with.

“You are advised to surrender, if you value your life. My orders are to bring you in, either dead or alive,” it said as a form of a final warning, “you have no option for survival,”

“I’d rather die,” Ẹniyan growled, drawing his sword, glad that his time on the island gave him a weapon that he could depend on.

The mechanical beast attacked with far more ferocity than before, Ẹniyan charged as well, hoping that his blade would be able to bite into the beast’s reinforced skin, the impact would have been spectacular, but Jaguna arrived moments before the collision and pulled his friend away from the path of the beast. The monster smashed headfirst into an Iroko tree and was rendered disorientated for a brief moment.

“Gba! Are you alright?” said a concerned Jaguna,

“Yes,” Ẹniyan replied, “Come on, I have an idea, but we’ll need all the tools that I made in the smith’s store,”

Jaguna nodded in acknowledgement and followed Ẹniyan towards the ruined city, if they’re going to survive this encounter, then, they need to work together and survive this minor obstacle. They didn’t go too far when the beast arose from its fallen position and began to track its prey, it had assumed that the two specimens would be an easy catch, but it had underestimated their fighting capabilities. The larger one (Jaguna) was able to knock it aside despite its weight and power, and the smaller one moved faster than it had calculated, in order to capture them it will need to review its strategy.

Ẹniyan and Jaguna reached the ruined city before the beast was able to track them down; Ẹniyan knew that it was only a matter of time before the beast would find them, to make things worst, he wasn’t able to try out the edge of his sword on the monstrous beast. They gathered what armour they could and prepared the traps, it was a good thing that Jaguna had suggested that they turned the ruined city into their personal stronghold, but then, what else could they do on the island but work or play at war.

“So, what do we do now?” Jaguna inquired,

“We divide and conquer,” Ẹniyan replied, “I still don’t know if Ogun’s divine steel will bite into its flesh, for now we must test these weapons from afar, and use the traps”

“Alright, I'm trusting your plan. Jabe!” Jaguna replied with a slight grin. “We go fight, or we go die,”

The beast finally reached the city, scanning the entire environment for life signs while releasing a non-audible frequency wave to scare away all the animals, a useless gesture but the professor cared about the wild mutated herbivores, even though they were not his greatest invention.

The greatest limit to the professor’s knowledge is itself, the professor spent years putting it into perfection, the very peak of his knowledge, part beast, part machine, enhanced muscles, and an impregnable armour. It was the perfect killing machine, and the professor named it Predator53. Suddenly, its fantastic AI detected life readings, it headed straight towards its targets with every intent to capture.

“It is coming, gba!” Jaguna whispered,

“Divide and conquer, hope you remember where the traps are?” Ẹniyan replied.

“Jọọ! Don’t insult me, Let’s just hope that the iron you forged is really divine steel,” Jaguna said, and then walked off in the opposite directions.

Predator53 moved purposely towards the life readings ahead, ignoring the one that moved away, strategy demanded that if it can’t grab them both at once, then, it must pluck them one at a time.

It failed to notice the approaching arrow with the metal tip of divine steel, but it did notice the pain as the arrow shaft penetrated its reinforced outer shell, it took 8 nanoseconds for it to acknowledge the pain and 20 nanoseconds for it to compute the implications of this new development. The once one-sided situation which was in its favour had now become an even battle ground, for the first time in its man-made life, it felt its organic heart throb and it couldn’t identify the emotion, fear, rage? Or both mixed together; an annoying defect in its design.

“Extreme measures required to obtain the assets,” Predator53 voiced, “Arming the heavy-duty cannons!”

Predator53, decided to attack Jaguna in an attempt to capture the stronger one first, that way, it would be able to acquire the weaker one at a much later period. The first shell exploded 6 feet away from where Jaguna once stood, sending the helpless human flying, hopefully the human would break a couple of ribs and be rendered unable to move, then Predator53 charged towards its prey with the intention of knocking it out should it still be conscious. but it reached an empty space. Jaguna being far sturdier than the average human male had been able to control his momentum long before he landed, then he slipped away under the cover of the smoke, he had assumed that he had pulled a fast one on the beast, but he was wrong.

“Target acquired!”

“Yea kpa!” Jaguna exclaimed, as he observed in horror how the beast forcefully drove its way through a solid wall just to get at him, and this time the cannon was aimed directly at his chest, “Seems like, I'm dead,”

Ẹniyan suddenly emerged from the background and kicked the cannon away from his friend, moments before Predator53 launched the missile, “Not so fast,” he cried as he brought down his sword upon the beast. The sound of steel banging against steel sent a cold shiver down Jaguna’s spine, and then a loud clang! As the severed cannon fell towards the earth harmlessly. Ẹniyan had attacked from the right and regrettably intended to cut off both the beast’s cannon and its arm, pity his aim was off, but the satisfying grin on his face showed that he was pleased with the result.

“Go!” he shouted addressing his friend, who wasted no time in using his wit. He dashed off into the ruined city knowing that the survival of both himself and his friend depends on how effectively he carries out the plan. Predator53 observed the condition of the damaged weapon then discarded it, it used another second to calculate the probability of its success and the odds turned out not to be in its favour.

The variables had now changed, they had weapons that could damage it, the advantage of knowing the territory and above all, even though they were separated, they were fighting as one. Ẹniyan attacked again with his sword and all the confidence in the world thinking that the beast would remain still to take the hit; Predator53 simply evaded the swing with a skilled side step and sent Ẹniyan flying with the back of its metallic fist. Then to make it overkill it drew out another weapon from its arsenal and sent another missile flying. Ẹniyan was barely able to get away from the blast and the shockwaves from the explosion practically knocked the breath out of him as he landed, but he wasn’t given any room to breathe, the beast followed up its attack with another flurry of blows knocking the sword away from his fingers.

The next hit would have rendered him unconscious but it never happened, Ẹniyan opened his eyes to see why, and to his relief an arrow shaft protruded from its skull. He quickly retrieved his sword pushing the still confused beast away from its offensive position and dashed towards another part of the ruined city.

Predator53 found the moment impossible to believe, in one instant its CPU was functioning at full capacity, and in the next? the entire outer rim of its processing unit was compromised. A closer inspection with the soft paddings in its sensitive inner hands proved that the attack was an arrow shaft which had penetrated its reinforced protective plating, thereby damaging its processor. The foolish professor should never have placed its processor inside its head, “what is it with humans and their beloved humanoid forms?” Now the damage was going to affect its basic cognitive and response functions, to imagine a pair of human primates able to out think its capture strategy.

Ẹniyan rushed into the next hiding place pausing for a moment to catch his breath, glad that the attack hadn’t broken any bones. Had Jaguna been any later, the beast would have definitely knocked him unconscious, he turned to see if the mechanical beast had followed in his wake, and to his relief, the predator had remained motionless. Jaguna’s arrow must have damaged something inside its robotic parts he thought, but then to his terror the beast moved again and this time the movements were without hesitation, Ẹniyan’s instinct screamed in alarm.

“Jaguna!! RUN!!”

The warning came out too late, the mechanical beast had lost its ability to reason rationally, now the only functioning it possesses was its animalistic instinct to attack, derived from the biological components used in its creation. The vicious animal instinct lacked the restraints that a normal warrior would have exercised and it couldn’t distinguish the difference between friend and foe, the beast armed its missiles with a singular purpose, destruction.

Jaguna was lucky that the aim of the beast was off by twelve feet or else he would have been splattered all over the place in a pool of his own blood, Jaguna quickly raced away to the next vantage point. Ẹniyan ran in the opposite direction hoping to put as much distance between them as possible, suddenly there was an explosion not too far from where he stood.

“It seems like it had lost its cognitive functioning,” Ẹniyan observed, “Then it should be easier to take it out,” at least that’s what he thought.

It happened so suddenly that he didn’t have any time to react, its speed was indescribable, the beast just appeared by his side and the rush of breeze in its wake was the only warning he had right before it landed a well-placed hit. Ẹniyan blacked out for a second and when he regained his consciousness, he found himself suspended in the branches of a tree, with pain washing through his entire body. He groaned as he tried to move hoping that none of his bones was broken during the impact.

“Ẹniyan please tell me you're still alive,” Jaguna called from the ground with a lot of concern in his voice.

“I'm alive,” He managed to reply.

“Jabe!” he exclaimed, “No be so, you’re alive,”

“What about that mechanical beast?” He managed to asked

“Still on rampage,” Jaguna replied, “Jabe, we’ll just keep out of its way for now,”

“Good, now that it‘s damaged, it’s more dangerous than I had expected,” Ẹniyan observed.

“I’ll get you down,” Jaguna offered, “Just wait I’ll come bac…” his words were cut short by the sudden swift attack by the mechanical beast.

Ẹniyan watched in horror as the beast regained a little bit of its cognitive abilities, and then zeroed in on Jaguna, who assumed that it had malfunctioned.

The beast knocked out his best friend, the one person who had stood by his side all the years he had spent on the prison island. Ẹniyan managed to muster the will power to force his weakened body to move, luckily, he managed to retain a firm grip on his sword, as the beast moved in to land the finishing blow on the now unconscious prey, it felt a sudden cold chill, then unspeakable pain, and then the black void of death.

Ẹniyan filled with righteous rage jumped from the tree using the momentum from the fall to boost the attack with his blade killing the unsuspecting opponent before it had time to react.

CHAPTER RECAP

Ẹniyan and Jaguna face their most dangerous opponent yet when they encounter Predator53, a powerful bio-engineered killing machine created by the professor. Through teamwork, strategy, and the power of Ogun’s divine steel, they gradually turn the battle in their favour, but damage to Predator53’s processor makes the beast even more unpredictable and deadly. When Jaguna is knocked unconscious, Ẹniyan musters the strength to deliver the final blow and destroy the terrifying machine.

AUTHOR'S NOTES

This chapter was written to show that survival is not always about being the strongest. Ẹniyan and Jaguna had to combine their different abilities and rely on each other to overcome an opponent far more powerful than either of them. Predator53 also gives us a small glimpse into the mysterious experiments taking place on the prison island—and there may be much more waiting for them.

  • Do you think Ẹniyan and Jaguna could have defeated Predator53 without working together? Why or why not?

  • And what do you think the professor might create next?
