The Strange Prince
The prince emerged at the
airport a few hours after the calm with a stern look on his face; he was
extremely irritable; bureaucracy can be the most frustrating system ever
invented by man. The time it consumes and the process it takes without even
allowing a single shortcut can drive an impatient prince over the edge, Kurumi
was close to killing a few of his men due to the building frustration.
“The techno-dampening
barrier?” he inquired from the one standing next to him.
“Sir,” the soldier replied.
“The logistics department will be shutting down all the generators in five
hours,”
“Tell them, I will kill
someone if those generators are not switched off within the next hour!” he
growled with venom in his voice, “The watch towers had already started the
process, so why is it still being delayed?”
“The supervisor refused to
shut down the generator until he received a written permission from you,” the
man replied.
“Remind me to kill him as soon
as this is over,” Prince Kurumi roared, as he boarded one of the hovercrafts
designated to carry them to the island, “If we arrive at the aftermath of
battle with no clues as to the cause of the explosions, then I will kill
everyone in the engineering department,”
“Sir,” one of the men called,
“it’s best we leave now, that way we would be able to reach the general area of
the conflict the moment the barrier is shut down,”
A perfect suggestion, Kurumi thought, plus if the barrier is still in full
power by the time he reaches the prison island, then he would be blameless for
killing whoever is responsible for the delay.
Prince Kurumi, the most
successful prince in the whole of the Yoruba Empire by reputation, a few years
back he was the least favoured prince of the Alaafin’s sons; now he is one of
the most ruthless men in the α»yα» Empire. He is Prince Kurumi of Ibadan, after
the failed war against the Fulanis. Kurumi returned to Ibadan to endure his
father’s endless scolding, he ignored all the mockery and insults that his
father threw in his direction and concentrated on how to reclaim his dignity;
not only to silence his arrogant father, but also those who had advised his
father to treat him the way he did. Through the help of an old friend who
happens to be the master of acquiring information, the prince managed to
execute the successful assassination of all the political elites that backed up
the Fulani invasion, ‘kill the head and the rebellion will crumble’. Then he
acquired incriminating information about his father through the help of his
information source but decided to wait patiently for his father to make a
foolish mistake, meanwhile he moved into a new level of political warfare. The
goal was to earn the trust of the people, since from experience.
He had learnt that true power
belongs to the people, so he engaged in charity campaigns, funds, distribution
and massive recruitment of men into his own personal army disguised as a
poverty eradication scheme. The ploy worked, his public ratings started going
up and he was acknowledged as a national hero, but to gain national acceptance
also attracted new adversaries; political leaders who realised that his
continued growing influence threatened their political status, so they sought
to end it before it affected their corrupt businesses. Kurumi suspected this
and had already prepared, a couple of well-placed assassinations which ended
the stubborn ones and humbled the cowards.
All this was part of his
master plan, he knew that his foolish father needed the corrupt elders to
assist him in the control of the empire and to do all the dirty work, that way
in the eyes of the people he would always appear as a saint. The king assumed
that he would continue to manage his kingdom in harmony as before, but Kurumi’s
actions had compromised such political harmony. The Alaafin was vexed by his
son’s actions and therefore hatched a scheme to publicly discredit the foolish
boy and as a result, permanently banish him from the political arena, a scheme
that he hoped would work on one as inexperienced as Kurumi. The Alaafin walked
into the trap like the fool he was, the problem with sending others to do your
dirty work is that while the minions gain experience and an instinct for the
trade; the leader’s intuition begins to dwindle.
The Alaafin fell into
something so big that the only way to rectify the situation was to blame one of
the supporting chiefs, Kurumi had killed all the chiefs capable of committing
such a crime; curses, ---Kurumi would be the one to take the blame, he
roared in the secrecy of his chambers. The king had imported a large
consignment of illegal drugs with the hope of making a lot of money for his own
ends, the plan was to allow the authorities to find some of the drugs with
Kurumi’s initials on them, to frame him for the illegal act. The plan worked at
first until his son walked in through his own front door and presented
photographic evidence of not just the latest crime in his record but of all the
crimes he had ever committed, the shock was enough to cause him to faint.
“Step down as king,” Kurumi
demanded, “Or I’ll upload this to the grid network,”
Those words cut the king so
deep that he felt his heart fade for more than an instant, but the evidence
would not only destroy his saint-like image, it would cause the kingdom to
revolt. “But I'm your father,” the king said in his defence, hoping to
neutralize his son’s hate with a bit of sentiment.
Kurumi laughed at his father’s
weakness, “Would a father treat his son the way you treated me?” he mocked,
“You killed my conscience with your own hands old man, to imagine that you
would use it as a weapon against me is almost ironic. I have no intention of
disappointing you father.” Kurumi grinned evilly, “you once said I was weak,
now I will show you my true strength and how cold my blood can be,”
“So, after today you intend to
claim the title of Alaafin for yourself?” the king said as terror washed over
his body.
“I never wanted the crown,”
Kurumi said in defiance, “The title I have always had my eye on was the rank of
Are Ona Kankanfo, the strongest warrior of this age,”
“I was afraid of the wrong
son,” the king said in self horror, the prophecy he received about one of his
sons killing him and taking over the kingdom had now been proven to be a lie.
His memory flashed as he reminisced on Kurumi’s childhood, the boy worshipped
him as any son would worship his father. Now they were both on each other’s
throats, fighting over a throne that wasn’t even necessary in the first place.
Kurumi smiled at the choice of
his father, the foolish old man chose to kill himself, instead of facing public
humiliation, the loss of his position and power. The rich are so easy to break,
take away their wealth and they become shells of their former selves, dead
despite the continuous beating heart. His younger brother the Aremα» (Crowned
prince) became the next king and he earned the title of ‘Are Ona Kankanfo’ the
highest military authority in the whole of the Yoruba empire; which means that
all the traditional Yoruba kings would be paying homage to him.

“The techno-dampening barrier
has been shut down sir,” the soldier under his direct command called, snapping
Kurumi out of his moment of reminiscing. It took a few milliseconds for him to
focus on reality and another for him to realise that he was in the hover craft,
he chuckled to himself as he regained his composure.
The moment might have been a
brief one but it served its purpose, because now he was not as angry as he was
before, it seems he might not kill anyone from the technical department after
all.
“Good,” Kurumi said as he
regained command of his emotions, “Send in the scouts with their weapons set on
stun, I want the assets, whatever it is, alive and well. I will kill anyone who
decides to disobey me,”
“Yes sir,” the soldier
replied.
“And one more thing,” he
pointed, “the moment they spot the assets, they must not engage; I repeat they
must not engage. I want to see it for myself before taking any action, is that
clear?”
“Yes sir,” the soldier
responded again.
“Now, let’s get down to
business, I want to know why the island is exploding when technology cannot
work here,”
“As you command, sir,” all the
men responded.

The Cyborg
The highlands in the
prosperous country of Lagos was filled with a dense forest of skyscrapers,
hovering billboards and the everyday chaos of people trying to make a living.
The highlands hovered a good seventy feet above the shores of the islands of LαΊΉkki.
Then there were some aspects of the local Lagos countryside that still
flourishes with strong green trees and all the beauty that nature can offer,
and the locals live on, stubborn to the ancient traditional rites of their
people. Badagry the state filled with palm trees and rich with the best of palm
wine, the state is popularly known as the floral garden of Lagos. For those who
cannot afford to patronize the highlands of Lekki beach then they can afford to
visit the palm tree paradise, this is the best place for lovers to meet and
mingle.
Hungbo, a natural-born male
stock of Badagry, likes to bring the women he charms to this spot, so he can
impress them and make them happy, from the look in her eyes he could tell that
he is not far from the mark. It will not be long now before she offers herself
to him on a golden platter.
“So tell me, Titi,” Hungbo
began, “Do you like it here?”
“Yes,” she replied with a glitter in her eyes,
“My love, I am so glad that you brought me here, the breeze, the air, and the
sun is so beautiful,”
“I'm glad you like it here,”
Hungbo said with a smile on his face, ---foolish girl, the only thing you
care about, is eye service, “There is something I’ve been wanting to ask
you, something that has been weighing on my heart for a long time,” he said,
hoping to further his sinister plan.
“What is it, my love?” the
beautiful girl inquired.
Hungbo smiled, with a twinkle
in his eyes, this girl is going to say yes to whatever he asks, so he will ask
the biggest question. Hungbo dropped to his knees and brought out his mobile
communication device to create a conducive atmosphere, the music he played was
a romantic one. Then he presented the ring and asked the question picking each
word one by one.
“Titi,” he said, “will you
marry…”
“Foolish girl!” another voice called from the
background, “You're not even far into your teens and already you're
contemplating marriage, but I can’t blame you. He is after all very charming
even in his late sixties,”
“How dare you ruin my moment?”
Titi shouted as she noticed the stranger approach, he was clothed in a large
jacket covering his entire body and his facial features were concealed by a
large hood.
“Young man!” Hungbo growled in
irritation, “I know that you are not going through any mental breakdown, so
please act mature and mind your own business,”
“Is that the way to talk to
one of your long lost sons? Daddy?” the stranger inquired, “I had to go through
hell to find you, this is not my idea of a happy family reunion. Seems like
I’ll have to introduce myself to you again,” the stranger took two steps
closer, the sound of metal landing on stone could be heard with each footstep,
“after all, the last time we met was on my birthday, I mean the day I was born,”
There was a shocking pause as
they stood there digesting the information that this stranger had just
delivered, the silence was disturbed when one of the approaching stranger’s
footfalls coincidentally landed on a stone revealing the clash of heavy iron
colliding with a concrete floor. The revelation was horrifying, this stranger
must be a cyborg!
“I don’t know you,” Hungbo
said as he panicked, judging from the look on his face he was about to run for
his precious life, the only thing that must have stopped him might be Titi, his
beloved, or the fact that it’s impossible to run from a person with cybernetic
enhancements.
“If you dare lie to me again,
I will make your death which is already a guarantee, a slow one,” the stranger
voiced with both hatred and suppressed rage.
“I'm sorry,” Hungbo pleaded.
“You!” the cyborg said
addressing the girl, “The only reason why I'm letting you live, is because you
are just a victim, like me. Go home and finish your education, foolish girl.
This man is not interested in marrying you, he is only interested in your
beauty and the child; did you know that babies attract a handsome prize in the
black market? Did you know that this man sells his babies and he’s been doing
it for many years? taking advantage of innocent stupid teenage little girls
like you?!” he said failing to hide his rage.
“Did you know that he sells
his babies to people who desire babies of their very own, but lack true
potential as parents. The only way for them to solve their problems is to buy
the solution. They bought me, and then when God blessed them with their own
child, I was useless so they sold me off like a piece of garbage to a mad
scientist who experimented on me until they turned me into this!” the stranger
revealed his face to Titi, the horror of seeing what could happen to her baby
caused her to tremble all the way down to her soul.
The denial was the first
emotion that ravaged her tender heart, fueled by her love and loyalty to
Hungbo, ---it cannot be, Hungbo is a good man, her chaotic mind
pronounced. He loves her; yes, he loves her. He proposed, damn it! of course
he loves me!
“You're lying,” she said
desperately with tears in her eyes, but she could not deny what her eyes were
seeing.
The stranger smiled at her in
mockery and then brought out a brown envelope with his mechanical hand, he
opened the envelope and brought out the pictures; each wedding photo showed
younger versions of Hungbo with different teenage girls having the same foolish
naΓ―ve smile on their faces.
“This one,” he said pointing
to one of the females, “is my mother, she’s number eleven in my father’s list.
You should be number twenty five, are you sure you still love him?”
She stood there shocked by the
information that she had just received, digesting each bitter globe with
difficulty, allowing the content reach into her very soul. Is this what her
parents warned her against, are these emotions real or false from the beginning.
“How could you?” she roared in
genuine betrayal, “I trusted you,”
“Let me explain …” Hungbo said
in his attempt to remedy the situation.
“You are not going to explain
anything,” the cyborg growled, “My mother and three of the other women warned
me about your golden tongue, you are going to die today. And you,” he said to
the heartbroken teen, “go home and forget about this man. It is best to have a
broken heart than to have a guilty conscience, he will convince you to abandon
all your children like he did with all the other women. Walk away and don’t
ever look back,”
Titi was really hurt, no doubt
she had a falling out with her parents because of Hungbo. She rejected their
advice because of her teenage stubbornness, the pain washed through her entire
being and suddenly she broke down and began to cry. Hungbo noticed this and
started to approach with the intent of comforting her but…
“Don’t you even think of going
near her, selfish bastard,” the cyborg snapped, “life is filled with all kinds
of pain, and betrayal is just another phase
of development, let her enjoy the pain,”
“But,” Hungbo said in a
defensive tone, “I might never see her again,”
The reply was quick and sharp,
the cyborg extended three claws from what seems to be its right hand and
stabbed the man’s shoulder with the cold intention of dislodging it, Hungbo
exclaimed from the sudden flush of pain and then felt the sensation of white
light, he blacked out immediately. The last words he heard was “Your words
don’t work on me, we will be going to a place where we can talk and where you
will not be distracted by the allure of women,”
